🐕 Canine Stress Ladder & Early Communication

Displacement Yawn or Lip Licking Stage 1: Subtle "I feel uneasy with what is happening around me, and I'm trying to calm myself." Pause interaction; give dog 3 feet of space.
Turning Head Away ("Look Away") Stage 1: Subtle "I am not seeking a confrontation. Please step back or cease approaching." Stop reaching over their head; avoid forced eye contact.
Whale Eye (Half-Moon Sclera visible) Stage 2: Heightened "I feel trapped or guarded. My threshold is nearly breached." Immediately remove trigger or guide dog to safe zone with gentle tone.
Sudden 1-Second Freeze / Stiffening Stage 3: Critical "I am deciding whether I must defend myself. Back off immediately." Do NOT touch, scold, or corner. Stop all movement; step back calmly.
Growl or Low Rumble Stage 3: Warning "You missed my earlier signals. I am giving you one last clear warning." Never punish a growl! Respect the boundary and relieve the pressure.
